Art Therapy

Led by professional Art Therapists with many years’ experience  and supported by our care teams, Art Therapy is much more than a creative process. Of course the aim is to create a beautiful piece of artwork which everyone has been involved in and can be admired, but the focus is on the process of creating rather than the finished product. No artistic talent is needed for this activity to be enjoyable.

The act of making art allows people to externalise inner experiences – thoughts, feelings and memories. People don’t even need to take part in the actual painting, drawing, or collage making. They can just join the group and be part of the conversations that take place. Often the creative process can prompt residents to a memory that might involve music and as a result the group often sing songs prompted by whatever art piece is being created.

Art Therapy builds confidence and we see residents who initially wouldn’t get involved because they say “they can’t paint” happily coming back to the group week after week and thoroughly enjoying themselves as part of the session.

Art Therapy is a powerful outlet for a range of emotions and taps into the healing power of creativity to support mental and emotional wellbeing. Laughter, tears, anger, or frustration can all be displayed during a session but at the end everyone goes away with a sense of achievement, belonging, and participation.

Sessions run either weekly or bi monthly.
