Dementia Plus (CBDU)

This is a service that is for people who live with advanced dementia and require specialist support.

This type of service has been referred to as a ‘challenging behaviour unit’ or ‘complex dementia care’. We prefer to use more positive language, Dementia Plus Communities.

The model of care we follow incorporates proven strategies to reduce the risk of mental health crisis, placement breakdown and inappropriate hospital admissions.

Our staff are experienced and trained in how best to support people with psychological, behavioural and emotional symptoms of dementia.

Key features and benefits

1. Special Environment

A purpose-designed space that promotes a therapeutic atmosphere while maintaining residents independence.

2. Highly Trained Team

Enhanced staff training to support individuals with complex needs. Training includes de-escalation techniques, trauma-informed care, and psychological support frameworks.

3. Holistic Care Approach

  • Promoting independence and recovery, where possible.
  • Effectively supporting residents during periods of emotional distress, reducing risk and promoting coping strategies through evidence-based interventions.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and occupational therapists where needed.

4. Safety and Security

Promotion of positive risk taking, where possible in a safe and secure environment. Residents are supported to maintain or regain independence in an environment that is as least restrictive as possible.

With a focus on positive outcomes residents will be supported to achieve their goals and aspirations.

Innovation in dementia plus care

L&M Healthcare have been at the forefront of innovation in the care home sector for several years and continuously improve our service provision.

Having won a Care Home Award for our Dementia Plus concept in 2018, one year later, a pilot study, which ran at Whittle Hall in Warrington, looked at whether five minutes activity, five minutes immediately before a mealtime could have an impact on the health and wellbeing of people living with dementia. The study revealed some surprising results such as people who were usually assisted to eat, eating by themselves. This was identified as an entirely new area of study and the founding team are now working with the University of Bradford to turn this into a full-scale research study.

Founding team members of the pilot study group have since been invited to speak at NHS conference level and at The Design in Mental Health Conference.

Shortlisted for five awards, it won a Care Home Award for Best Dining Experience and second place in the British Journal of Nursing Awards for Excellence in Innovation. A three-page article also appeared in The Care Home Environment Magazine.
